History

The beginnings of Laurel Crest are deeply rooted and closely entwined with the shared vision of members of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia.River  This very special group of people recognized a need, and set out to create a community in which retirees among their congregation could enjoy a vibrant, joyful lifestyle in comfort and security, with a full continuum of care to meet any changing needs.

A committee was formed and a beautiful idea began to be transformed into reality. The land, nearly 18 acres of pristine waterfront property overlooking the Congaree River, was purchased from Dr. Rion Dixon and partners. Plans were drawn, ground was broken and the future came into ever-sharper focus.

Laurel Crest opened its doors on August 29, 1994. From that day to this, the goals of that forward-thinking committee have remained unchanged. Residents of Laurel Crest are members of a unique community, a beautiful village of hope in which each person's evolving needs are met, with thoughtful attention to whole well-being: social, physical, emotional and spiritual.
